Closing the skills gap with industry-led training

Closing the skills gap with industry-led training

As skills shortages continue to impact the UK’s engineering and construction sectors, Mainmark Ground Engineering UK is leading the way for greater investment in industry-led training.

As skills shortages continue to impact the UK’s engineering and construction sectors, Mainmark Ground Engineering UK is leading the way for greater investment in industry-led training.

Recent figures from the Department of Education highlight the scale of the problem, with 5,900 “hard to fill” civil engineering job vacancies recorded in 2024 due to a lack of expertise or qualifications, an 84 per cent rise from 3,200 in 2022 when the survey was last run.

At the same time, climate-driven pressures, including soil desiccation, increased ground movement, plus more frequent and extreme weather events, are significantly intensifying the demand for advanced geotechnical expertise. The British Geological Survey estimates that climate-driven ground movement could put a further 1.2 million homes at risk of subsidence by 2050, taking the total from 4.5 million today to 5.7 million.

As a result, business-driven training and continuous professional development (CPD) have become critical to closing the capability gap and ensuring the industry is ready to meet future challenges.

To help address this need, Mainmark UK, renowned for its expertise in subsidence repair and ground improvement, delivers a series of free CPD-accredited seminars for construction and building specialists, ground engineers and property managers. These sessions are designed to improve industry-wide understanding of the latest technologies, methodologies and sustainable ground engineering solutions.

Tom Kavanagh, General Manager at Mainmark UK, said: “Businesses can’t wait for the pipeline of new engineers to grow. Sharing practical expertise through CPD is essential if we’re going to manage subsidence, climate-driven soil behaviour and the wider pressures facing the industry.”
“The challenges are evolving faster than the workforce, and the pressures are only increasing. Continual learning and industry-led training allow organisations to future-proof their teams and ensure they have the capability, confidence and technical resilience required on the ground. It’s about equipping engineers, insurers and local authorities with up-to-date, practical knowledge, so we can improve outcomes, reduce disruption and raise standards across the entire sector.”

Mainmark’s seminars are recognised by the CPD Certification Service, meaning they contribute towards the Continued Professional Development requirements across engineering, construction, property, and facilities management sectors.

The ground engineering firm is now taking bookings for their January/February 2026 CPD programme, which will cover all aspects of resin injection, screw piling and soil nailing. Each one-hour session, which includes an open Q&A segment, can be delivered in person, on Teams or a combination of the two, depending on the delegate’s needs.
